The Shiras Moose of Colorado.
Bull Moose in Lily Pads
A friend and I were able to work this moose for two days at a place called Lost Lake. Lost Lake was destroyed by the Cameron Peak wildfire, so I doubt I will be seeing many moose there in the future.
Bull Moose - High Key
Taken in 2013, this has been one of my best selling moose photos over the years.
Flehmen Response
An animal may perform the flehmen response when investigating sites of particular interest, or perhaps (more generally) odors or tastes. I prefer to be less fancy with the terminology and call it sniffing.
Adult Bull Moose
Taken on a group tour in Northern Colorado in 2019. One of several large bulls munching lake grass together.
Friendly Bull
The morning I took this photo, this guy was standing alone in the woods next to the lake shore. My group walked right past him in the dark, less than 20 feet away. He grunted to let us know he was there and then casually walked out into the lake in front of us to feed on lake grass. An experience I will long remember.
Sunset Moose in Their Environment
This photograph was taken at sunset with a full moon rising in the distance.
Hooligans
A group of young bulls swam across the lake to harass this cow and the photographers.
Thirsty Calf
Taken in 2020, this calf was with its mother at a fresh water spring in the Rawah Wilderness.
Moose in the Mist
Taken on a 2014 workshop, this Bull swam through the dawn mist and strolled right though the group without regard or concern.
Cruising Across The Lake
Taken in 2013, this bull was one of 5 moose hanging out in the lake that morning.
Rain? No Problem
This large bull was feeding in the stream during a strong rainstorm.
Fresh Antlers
Taken in 2015. I was out this particular morning in search of moose shedding velvet from their antlers. I found this guy a day late. He had already shed the velvet and was happily munching the willows just a few feet from me.
Cow Moose in Lily Pads
This cow swam across the lake to see what I was all about. Once she got a look at me, she headed for the shore, unconcerned with my presence.
Bull Moose by Lake
This photo was taken on one of my moose tours in 2018. As I recall, there were 5 bulls hanging out in the willows near this lake. This guy needed a drink a water.
Curiosity
This bull was hanging out in a secluded meadow. When he heard me trying to sneak a peak, he looked up and gave me a great profile to photograph.
Bird Photography by Gary Gray
A selection of some of my favorite bird photos.
Flight of Sandhill Cranes
Taken in March of 2020 near Monte Vista, Colorado.
Osprey
Taken in May of 2019 at Lake Letitia near Red Feather Lakes, CO. This osprey had been circling the lake for a few minutes when it decided to fly directly towards me before it made an unsuccessful dive for a trout.
Burrowing Owls
Weld County, Colorado. Cute little birds with a great personality. July 2012.
Wood Ducks
Taken at one of the local lakes near my home. The one full of wood ducks. November, 2012
Scarlet Macaw
Wild macaw in Costa Rica. This bird was hanging out near the restaurant my wife and I were eating at. Totally habituated to humans, he ended up coming to our window and the waitress offered up her arm which he promptly jumped on. After touring the inside of the restaurant, she brought him back to our window and let him loose. He promptly flew about 20 feet away to a tree branch and looked back at us. Snap!
Sandhill Crane Stick Dance
Taken near Monte Vista, Colorado during the 2017 Sandhill Crane migration. Sandhill Cranes will gather together in small groups and sometimes throw sticks into the air and then do a little dance as they watch them fall.
Canada Geese Blastoff
Canada Geese will gather in large numbers and mingle with the Sandhill Cranes during the migration. Taken Near Monte Vista, CO in March of 2016
Double-crested Cormorant in Flight
Double-crested Cormorant gliding over a lake. These birds fly fast. I clocked on flying parallel to my car along a Florida highway at 60mph. Taken at a lake near my home in March, 2018
White Great Blue Heron
In very specific locations in Florida, there are Great Blue Heron\'s that are completely white. Very rare bird to see. I found this guy hanging out in the mangroves on the Gulf Coast. The picture was taken from a boat in April, 2014.
American Avocets Mating
These are very groovy birds. They have long thin legs that allow them to wade the shallows near shorelines of lakes looking for food. They have a very specific mating ritual. The male (on top) will lean towards his female of interest and flap his beak in the water for her to see. If she agrees to the terms, she\'ll dip down into the water and present herself to the male. In this photo, the male has just made his mount. Taken in May of 2012 at a local lake.
Bald Eagle
This photo was taken at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge near Denver in February, 2013. Perched in a tree near a trail, it amazing stayed there when I pointed my camera, allowing me to get a nice profile from close up.
Mandarin Duck (male)
One of the most beautiful ducks you\'ll ever see. This little fellow became quite a celebrity to the local photographers between 2010 and 2012, when it was living in Clear Creek, near Golden, Colorado. He had quite an attitude too. At first, the presence of this bird was only known to a few people, but as with anything unique in this world, once people found out about him, the word spread. The bird eventually died of some unknown illness in early 2013. Photo taken in October, 2012.
Yellow-headed Blackbird
I got this photo near Walden, Colorado in June, 2017. For a couple of years, these birds were living near Walden in large numbers. They seemed to quit going there in 2018 and I wish I knew where they went.
Sandhill Crane Blastoff
Each year in March, the Sandhill Cranes migrate by the thousands through the Monte Vista, Colorado area. I got this shot of a very large group of cranes taking off in unison. March, 2018.
Great Blue Heron Feeding
We have a local lake that populates with Great Blue Heron beginning each year in February. I found this guy chomping away along the shore at a nearby pond in March, 2018.
